Overview

Pinvas keeps your reference pictures and clips on a board in the 3D View sidebar, so you work beside them instead of switching to another program.

Version 1.0.0 needs Blender 5.0.0 or newer. It adds one tab, Pinvas, to the 3D View sidebar (press N).

The Pinvas tab open beside the 3D View, with five old-master studies, a note and a frame titled Anatomy studies on the board
A board with five pictures inside a frame, and a note beside them.

Eight things to try first#

Five study sheets lying scattered over the board, then packed into one tight block with Ctrl+P
Ctrl+P on five pictures.

Tidy a pile of references in one go#

Select some pictures and press Ctrl+P. Optimal packs them into one tight block that fits your board. Group them under a titled Frame, or line them up from the Arrange menu.

The E eyedropper clicked on a painting twice; each time a swatch at the foot of the board shows the colour as a hex code
The swatch after clicking the painting.

Pick a colour straight from a picture#

Press E, then click a picture. The colour under the mouse is copied as a hex code you can paste anywhere, or send To Brush or To Material from the right-click menu. Press F to view one picture on its own, and Esc to go back.

A Muybridge horse clip on the board, played, paused, scrubbed and set to 2x
The clip played, paused, scrubbed and set to 2x.

Study motion and timing from a clip#

Drop a clip onto the board and press Space to play it. Step a frame with Left and Right, switch on Follow Timeline so the clip follows Blender's current frame, or loop one action with Set Loop Start Here and Set Loop End Here.

The Pen drawing a loose circle round a horse's head, then an ellipse, an arrow and a rectangle drawn one after another with the other tools over a study of a horse in motion
Draw mode: a loose circle with the Pen, then an ellipse, an arrow and a rectangle.

Sketch over a reference#

Press the pencil Draw button and a tool strip appears: Pen, Line, Arrow, Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon, Text and Eraser. Hold Shift for a circle or a square and Alt to draw from the middle. Drawings stay on the board until you send them.

The Ellipse tool circling the eye socket and the teeth on Leonardo's skull study, blue pointers with round dot ends joining each circle to its label, blue arrows pointing at the cheekbone and the cut-away half, the Text tool typing the labels Eye socket, Teeth, Cheekbone and Cut-away half in boxes that fit them, then Select picking the eye-socket circle and red chosen in the style column, which turns it red
Circle with the Ellipse, point with dot-ended and arrow-headed lines, label with Text, then select and recolour.

Circle, point and label#

Circle a part with the Ellipse, point at another with an Arrow, and click with the Text tool to type a label. An arrow can end in a round dot that marks one exact spot. Then press V or pick Select and click a drawing: pick a colour or weight in the style column and it takes it, in one undo step. Drag a drawing to move it. A line or arrow also has a round handle at each end: drag one to change that end.

Drawings on the board sent with Send to Scene as Grease Pencil, then a picture sent as an Image Plane; both appear in the 3D View
A sketch and a picture sent to the scene.

Send a sketch or image into your scene#

Select your drawings, right-click and choose Send to Scene, then Drawing as Grease Pencil. You get one real Grease Pencil object with its colours, line weights, fills and arrow heads. A picture goes the same way, as an Image Plane, an Image Empty or a Camera Background.

Three study sheets selected and joined in a new frame with Shift+P, the frame titled and dragged across the board with its pictures
Shift+P joins the selection in a frame.

Group pictures in a frame#

Select some pictures and press Shift+P. Type a title and the frame fits round them. Drag the frame and everything in it moves; drag a picture out and the frame follows.

The right-click menu opened over a picture on the board, then its Send to Scene and Arrange submenus
Right-click a picture for the board menu.

Right-click a picture for its tools. Send to Scene places it as a Camera Background, an Image Empty or an Image Plane. Greyscale, Flip Horizontally and the Proportion Grid help you judge it, and Overlay lets you see through the board to the viewport.

More of what it does#

Start with Install, then put your first pictures on a board.

Install

Pinvas needs Blender 5.0.0 or newer. Blender 4.x cannot install it.

Install the add-on#

Keep the downloaded ZIP file as it is; Blender installs it directly.

  1. In Blender, open Edit > Preferences > Get Extensions.
  2. Open the menu at the top right (the small down arrow) and choose Install from Disk....
  3. Choose the Pinvas ZIP file. Blender installs and enables the add-on.

Blender lists two permissions for the add-on, worded "Import reference pictures from disk" and "Paste pictures and copied files onto the board".

Find the board#

  1. Hover over a 3D View and press N to open the sidebar.
  2. Open the Pinvas tab.

An empty board reads "Empty board", "Drop pictures here, or paste with Ctrl+V" and "Middle-drag to pan · Scroll to zoom".

The Pinvas tab with an empty board in the 3D View sidebar
A new board, with the Import, Fit and Undock buttons on its bar.

If another add-on such as a panel manager has moved or renamed the tab, look for Pinvas in the sidebar's tab column.

Update the add-on#

  1. Open Edit > Preferences > Add-ons, find Pinvas and choose Uninstall.
  2. Restart Blender.
  3. Install the new ZIP the same way.

Boards are saved inside your .blend files, so updating or uninstalling does not touch them. A board made in an earlier version opens in the new one.

Once the tab is there, try the quick start.

Quick start

This takes about three minutes and ends with five pictures packed into one block beside your viewport.

  1. Open the Pinvas tab in the 3D View sidebar.
  2. Click Import on the board's bar.
  3. Select five picture files in the file window and confirm.
  4. Move the mouse over the board and press Ctrl+P.
  5. Press Home to fit every picture into view.

The pictures arrive in a row in the middle of the board, sized to fit, and stay selected. Ctrl+P is Optimal pack: with pictures selected it packs those, and with nothing selected it packs the whole board.

Five study sheets (Dürer's draughtsman, Muybridge's horse and bird, a lay figure and a camera lucida) packed into one tight block on the board
The result of Ctrl+P on five pictures.

Keys only act while the mouse is over the board. Everywhere else Blender behaves as usual.

Next: add, move and edit pictures, or arrange the board.

Add and edit pictures

Bring pictures in#

The formats are PNG, JPEG, JPEG 2000, BMP, TGA, TIFF, EXR, HDR, WebP, PSD, DDS, Cineon, DPX and SGI. Videos come in the same three ways; see Videos.

Select and transform#

Do thisTo
Click a pictureSelect it (Shift+click adds or takes away)
Drag a pictureMove it, with the rest of the selection
Drag on the empty boardBox-select (Shift adds, Ctrl takes away); a click there selects nothing
Drag a corner handleScale, keeping the opposite corner still (Alt: about the middle)
Drag the round handle above the pictureTurn (Ctrl: 15° steps)
Ctrl+drag a corner handleCrop the picture; the opposite edges stay
Alt+RStraighten
Alt+SBack to actual size

A selects all and Alt+A selects none. Esc or a right-click during a drag cancels it.

The right-click menu#

Right-click anywhere on the board for every picture command, grouped so the menu stays short.

The board's right-click menu with the Arrange submenu open
The right-click menu, with Arrange open.
SubmenuWhat it holds
AddNote, Frame, Render Result, Viewport Snapshot
TransformFlip Horizontally, Flip Vertically, Straighten, Actual Size, Uncrop, Parent to Last Selected, Release from Parent
AppearanceGreyscale, Opacity..., Values..., Proportion Grid
ViewSelect All, Select None, Fit All, Fit Selected, Show Hidden, Focus, Overlay

Video holds the video commands, including Stitch, Open Stitch, Unstitch and Analyse. Send to Scene, Arrange and Make Palette are submenus or commands of their own. With nothing selected the menu holds only Import Pictures..., Paste, Add, Arrange, View and Pack Pictures into the .blend.

Taking a picture off the board does not delete its image at once. It goes when the file is saved and nothing else uses it.

Move, scale and turn with the keys#

G, S and R work as they do in Blender, with the mouse over the board: click, Enter or Space keeps the change; right-click or Esc drops it. X or Y during G locks the move to that axis. Ctrl snaps (grid steps, tenth steps of size, 15° turns) and Shift makes the mouse count a tenth. Shift+D duplicates the selection and moves the copies.

While one of these runs, a hint along the board's foot lists the keys that apply.

Undo with Ctrl+Z. Every move, scale, turn and edit is one step.

Arrange the board

Right-click and open Arrange to work on the selected pictures. Notes and drawings count as pictures here.

The Arrange submenu listing Lay Out, Size, Align and Spacing commands
Arrange has four groups: Lay Out, Size, Align and Spacing.
GroupCommandWhat it does
Lay OutOptimal (Ctrl+P)Packs the pictures into one tight block shaped like the board, so they show as big as possible once the view fits them. With nothing selected it packs the whole board, and the view then shows it all.
Lay OutRow, Column, GridSide by side with the tops level, one under another with the left edges level, or in rows and columns.
SizeSame Height, Same Width, Same SizeGives each picture the selection's average height, width or area.
AlignLeft, Centre, Right, Top, Middle, BottomLines up their edges or middles.
SpacingSpace Evenly Across, Space Evenly DownEqual gaps between three or more pictures; the outer two stay.

Change the gap and the order#

After Optimal, Row, Column or Grid, Blender's Adjust Last Operation panel (bottom left of the 3D View) changes the gap and the order. The order is as placed (reading order), by name, or as added.

Frames#

Optimal with a frame selected packs the frame's contents inside it and fits the frame round them. See Notes, frames and drawing.

Fit the view#

Home or the Fit button on the board's bar shows every picture. Fit Selected, under View in the right-click menu, shows only the selection, and 1 (or a click on the zoom label at the board's bottom left) returns to 100%.

Judge a picture

These tools change what the board shows. They never change the picture file.

Values#

All four are under Appearance in the right-click menu.

Crop#

Ctrl+drag a corner handle to cut a picture down; the opposite edges stay. Uncrop shows the whole picture again, in the same place.

Pick a colour#

  1. Press E with the mouse over the board.
  2. Click a picture.

The colour under the mouse is read from the picture's own pixels, not from the screen. Pinvas copies it as #RRGGBB and shows a swatch with the word "copied" for a few seconds. Esc or a right-click cancels the pick.

A painting shown alone in Focus, with a swatch at the foot of the board reading #8F6036 copied
The swatch after clicking the painting's wall; the picture is shown alone in Focus.

The strip stays up while the mouse is on it. Click a colour in it to copy its #RRGGBB again and make it the picked colour.

Use a colour#

See Use the board with the scene for the messages these commands give when something is missing.

Notes, frames and drawing

A board with a frame titled Anatomy studies round five pictures, and a note reading Keep the hands small. Compare with the skull.
A frame holds the pictures; a note sits beside them.

Notes#

Press Shift+A over the board and choose Note, or right-click, open Add and choose Note. The note appears where the mouse is, ready to type.

A note fits what you type: it widens with its longest line, and a line longer than a note's usual width wraps onto the next. Labels typed with the Text tool are notes too, so a one-word label is a small box.

While you type, every key goes to the note, so nothing reaches the viewport. A note left empty goes away.

The Add menu with Pictures or Videos, Paste, Note, Frame, Render Result and Viewport Snapshot
The Add menu, opened with Shift+A.

Frames#

Add > Frame draws a titled frame round the selection, or an empty frame when nothing is selected, and lets you type its title. Double-click the title to rename it.

A frame knows what it holds, as a frame does in Blender's node editor, and fits round it.

Join and remove#

Removing a frame leaves what it held on the board, in the outer frame if it had one. Duplicate a frame together with what it holds and the copy is a frame holding the copies. Export Board, Import Board and a board copied with Duplicate keep who holds what. A frame on a board from an older version keeps its size and takes in what lay inside it the first time you click on the board.

Draw on the board#

Press the pencil Draw button in the board's bar. A tool strip appears along the top of the board and a style column down its left edge. Draw mode starts off. It opens on the Pen the first time, and after that on the drawing tool you used last, which is kept with the scene. Esc goes back to Select.

SelectV or 1Pick, move, resize and box-select, as ever. Drawings can be picked and moved too.
Pen2Draws freehand. When you let go the line is thinned and lightly smoothed.
Line3Drags a straight line.
Arrow4Drags a line with a head.
Rectangle5Drags a box.
Ellipse6Drags an ellipse.
Polygon7Click corners. Click the first corner to close the shape, or press Enter or right-click to end it open. A polygon that crosses itself is outlined and never filled.
TextTClick the board and type a note. It is the note you already have.
Eraser8Rubs out parts of drawings. Rubbing out part of a closed shape leaves a plain line.
Highlighter9Paints a wide, see-through stroke over what matters.
Ruler0Drag to measure. Its length, in board units (one to a pixel of a picture at 100%), and its angle show on it.

The number keys work only while Draw mode is on. Shift keeps a line to 15° steps and makes a rectangle square or an ellipse a circle. Alt draws from the middle. Esc or a right-click drops a drawing in progress. The eye at the end of the strip, Show drawings, hides every drawing so you can see the pictures clean; they stay on the board. Draw inside, next to it, is explained below.

The style column#

With drawings selected, the column restyles them all in one undo step. With nothing selected it sets the style for the next drawing. Locked drawings are skipped, and a row that does not apply is not shown. On a board narrower than about 340 pixels the column is one swatch: click it to open the column.

Change what you drew#

Switch to Select and click a drawing. A line or arrow has a round handle at each end: drag one and the other end stays put (Shift keeps 15° steps, Esc puts it back). A rectangle or ellipse resizes freely from any corner or side. Drawings are board items, so they also move, scale, turn, flip, duplicate, lock, hide and undo like pictures. A filled shape is picked from inside; an unfilled one along its line, so the pictures under it stay reachable.

Size the bars#

The strip and the column each have a faint grip on their right edge and lower edge, as Blender's own toolbar has. Drag the right edge to change the width: the icons wrap into rows, and wider still, show their names. Drag the lower edge to make the icons bigger, with their spacing. Esc puts a drag back and a double-click on a grip restores the normal size. The sizes are kept in the add-on's preferences: Tool Strip Icon Size, Tool Strip Width, Style Column Icon Size and Style Column Width.

Drawings that belong to a picture#

Draw inside, at the end of the strip, is on by default. With it on a drawing can only be started on a picture or a video. It belongs to the one it started on, stays inside that picture's edge, and moves, scales and turns with it. Starting on the bare board shows "Draw inside is on: start on a picture or a video (switch it off in the strip to draw on the bare board)". Switch Draw inside off to draw anywhere.

To make any items follow another, select them, then select the one that leads last, right-click, open Transform and choose Parent to Last Selected. Release from Parent lets them go; they stay where they are. Hiding or removing a parent takes its drawings with it. Flip, Straighten, lock and crop on a parent do not reach its drawings.

Drawings on a video#

A drawing made on a video lives on the frame on show and holds until the next drawing, as Blender's Annotations do. Drawing on a playing video pauses it. Add a blank frame to end a held drawing.

With a picture or video selected in Draw mode, the drawing panel runs down the board's right edge. A board narrower than about 420 pixels has no room for it.

The drawing panel, with the onion skin on.

Analyse a video#

Right-click a video, open Video and choose Analyse. The video opens alone with a timeline of its drawings. ![A horse clip opened alone, with one timeline row per layer under it and a tick on every frame that has a drawing](assets/analyse.png "Analyse: a row of ticks for each layer.")

Click the timeline to go to a frame. Drag a drawing's tick to another frame to move it, hold Alt as you let go to copy it, and press X to remove it. Esc, F or a double-click goes back to the board.

Send drawings to the scene#

Nothing you draw enters your scene until you send it. See Use the board with the scene.

Blender's Annotate tools#

The Annotate tools in the 3D View's toolbar still draw on the board when one of them is active, and so does D+drag (D+right-drag erases). Their lines take the active annotation layer's colour and thickness, and they are board items too.

Lock and hide#

Videos

Videos come in the same way as pictures: Import, a drop, or pasted files. They stay linked to their files on disk and play without sound. Crop, flip, greyscale, values and the eyedropper all work on the frame on show.

The strip#

Hover over a video, or select it, and a strip appears along its foot.

From left to right: the play button, the scrub bar with the loop range lit, the frame count (here 15 of 31), the Follow Timeline button and the speed. Rest the mouse on any part of the strip and a tip says what it does for the clip as it is now.

Play and scrub#

Play, pause, scrub and speed on a clip.

Loop#

Right-click, open Video and choose Set Loop Start Here or Set Loop End Here. Clear Loop plays the whole clip. Without a loop a clip stops on its last frame.

Follow the timeline#

Follow Timeline (the small timeline button on the strip, or right-click > Video) makes the clip show the scene's frame plus an offset. Scrub Blender's timeline or play the scene and the clip follows.

Sync to This Frame sets the offset so the frame on show belongs to the scene's current frame.

Stitch, analyse and edit#

Send a video to the scene#

A video can go to the scene whole, as a movie that plays; see Use the board with the scene. Its crop stays on the board.

Stitch videos

A stitch plays several videos one after another as one video. No file is cut or written: each clip has a start and an end marker, and only the part between them plays.

Make a stitch#

  1. Select two or more videos.
  2. Right-click, open Video and choose Stitch.

The videos go inside the stitch in reading order, with the last one wired to Output. The board shows the stitch as one video with a small mark on it and its length in seconds. It plays, scrubs, loops and changes speed like any video. Follow Timeline, a loop range, crop and Send to Scene are not available on a stitch.

A horse clip on the board as a stitch: a small two-block mark at its top left and the length 1.5s of 4.0s on its strip
A stitch on the board, with its mark and its length in seconds.

Draw on a stitch#

Select the stitch, switch Draw on and draw as on any video. A drawing belongs to the frame of the clip you drew on. It shows while that clip plays, from that frame until the next drawing on the layer, and not in the other clips. The drawing panel's Frame, Add and Clear work on the clip showing, and its frame chips list that clip's drawn frames.

Because a drawing belongs to its clip, moving a node, reordering the chain or using the clip twice keeps it with the clip. A drawing outside a clip's trim waits there until the trim is widened. Taking a clip out of the stitch deletes its drawings (Ctrl+Z brings them back). Drawings already on a video, with their layers, move onto the stitch when it joins, and Unstitch gives them back to their videos. Analyse works on a video alone, not on a stitch.

Add videos to a stitch#

Drag the videos you want onto a stitch on the board and let go with Shift held. Each joins the stitch after its last clip, wired on to Output, and leaves the board. Drawings made on it move onto the stitch and show while that clip plays. Several selected videos join in reading order. Without Shift they are only moved; a still picture is never taken in. It is one undo step.

To add a video from a file instead, open the stitch and use Add Videos... (below).

The stitch view#

Double-click a stitch, or select it and press Tab (or right-click > Video > Open Stitch), and the board gives way to the stitch as nodes. Tab or Esc goes back.

The stitch view: four clip nodes, each with a trim bar, wired one after another to an Output node. The first and last are the same clip, sharing a trim
The stitch view: four clips wired to Output.

Every action in the view is one undo step. A clip whose file is missing is skipped. A stitch is saved with the .blend, and is kept by Duplicate, Duplicate Board, Export Board and Import Board.

Send an edit from the Video Editor#

The Video Editor's header with a Send to Pinvas button after the Image menu
The button on the Video Editor's header.

In Blender's Video Editor, Send to Pinvas on the editor's header renders the scene's frame range to an MP4 and adds it to the board, to the right of what is there. The movie is written to a pinvas_sends folder beside the .blend (a temporary folder when the file is unsaved), numbered, and the scene's output settings go back as they were. Blender stays usable while it renders, and the video joins the board when the render ends.

If the render cannot start, the status bar says "Could not start the render" and why.

Use the board with the scene

Put the scene on the board#

Send a picture into the scene#

Select a picture, right-click and open Send to Scene:

ChoiceWhat you get
Camera BackgroundThe picture as the active camera's background image.
Image EmptyAn image empty at the 3D cursor, facing the view.
Image PlaneA textured plane at the 3D cursor.

Crop, flips, turn and opacity are kept. A cropped picture sends a packed copy of the part that shows. A video sends as a movie that plays; Pinvas then says "A video goes whole: its crop is only on the board".

Send drawings into the scene#

Select drawings made in Draw mode, right-click and open Send to Scene:

ChoiceWhat you get
Drawing as Grease PencilOne Grease Pencil object at the 3D cursor, facing the view.
Drawing as Grease Pencil, in Front of CameraThe same object in front of the scene's camera, facing it.
Drawings sent to the scene as a Grease Pencil object with a translucent green rectangle, then a picture sent as an Image Plane; both appear in the 3D View
A sketch sent as Grease Pencil, then a picture as an Image Plane.

The object has one layer. Lines, arrows with their heads, rectangles, ellipses, polygons, Pen strokes, dashed lines and fills are kept, with their colours and line weights, and a light fill stays see-through. It is sized like an Image Plane: as tall as one, however big the drawings are on the board. It is one undo step. Notes and pictures are not sent, and the entries are greyed when no drawing is selected.

Take colours into Blender#

Make Palette turns a picture's main colours into a Blender palette. If the picture is fully transparent Pinvas says "No colours to take: the picture is transparent".

After an eyedropper pick (see Judge a picture), Picked Colour has two choices:

Show with in the Boards menu links the current board to the selected object. With Follow Selection on, selecting that object brings its board up. With no object selected, Pinvas says "Select an object first".

Boards and files

The title on the board's bar is the board's name. Click it for the Boards menu.

On a floating or undocked board, drag the title to move the board and click it for the menu.

Where pictures are kept#

Blender saves the board with the .blend file, in the scene. Imported pictures stay linked to their files on disk, with paths relative to the .blend once you have saved it, so the .blend stays small. Pasted pictures have no file of their own, so Pinvas packs them into the .blend.

Before you move or send a file, right-click and choose Pack Pictures into the .blend. It packs every linked picture on the board and reports how many it packed.

A picture whose file cannot be found shows as a red Missing box with its name, so you always see what is gone. Videos always stay linked, so a moved .blend needs its video files to move with it.

Messages#

Exporting and importing boards report what happened: "Board saved to ..." with a picture count, Board "...": ... item... after an import, and "Board saved as ..." with the size after a PNG export. The failures are listed on Troubleshooting.

Dock, undock and overlay

Undock#

Undock, on the board's bar, opens the board in a window of its own, right where it was. Drag the window's title bar to move it anywhere, even onto another monitor. Drag its edges or corners to resize it; an outline follows and the window takes the size when you let go.

On Windows, Undock opens a real window. On other systems it floats the board over the viewport instead, moved by its title bar and resized from its corner.

Dock again#

  1. Carry the window over a 3D View. That view shows a small Dock here pad in the middle of its sidebar, or by its right edge when the sidebar is closed.
  2. Let go on the pad. The board docks into that view's sidebar with the same view and selection.

Let go anywhere else and it stays a window. Esc or a right-click while carrying it sends it back to where the drag began. Dock on the window, or Dock It Here in the sidebar it came from, puts it back too.

The undocked window stays above Blender's main window. Saving docks it first, so a saved file never holds an undocked board, and Ctrl+S inside the window docks it and saves.

Blender draws small arrows for its hidden regions at the undocked window's edges. They do nothing there.

One place at a time#

The board shows in one place at a time. Any other 3D View with the Pinvas tab open says where the board is, "in another view" or "in a window of its own", and offers Dock It Here. That button moves the board there with its view and selection.

Overlay#

Switch on Overlay (the half-disc button on a floating board, or right-click > View > Overlay). The board's background goes, the pictures show at the overlay opacity, and every click and key away from the bar goes to the viewport. You can trace or model through the board. Right-click to change the overlay opacity.

Focus#

Double-click a picture, or press F, to show that picture alone, fitted. The arrow keys step through the board's pictures and videos in reading order. Esc, F or a double-click goes back to the board as it was.

Move around the board#

Do thisTo
Middle-dragPan
ScrollZoom in or out at the mouse (crossing 100% stops on it)
Ctrl+middle-dragZoom smoothly (drag up or right to zoom in)
Ctrl+scroll, Shift+scrollPan sideways, pan up and down
Trackpad two-finger pan and pinchPan, zoom

Keys act only while the mouse is over the board. The keys Pinvas uses stay with the board even when nothing is selected, so they never reach the viewport under a floating board.

Troubleshooting and FAQ

A message appeared in Blender's status bar#

These are Pinvas's own messages, as Blender shows them.

"There is no picture on the clipboard"#

Ctrl+V found no picture. Copy an image, a screenshot, or picture files in your file manager, then paste again with the mouse over the board.

"Could not read the pasted picture"#

The clipboard held something Pinvas could not read as a picture. The reason is in the brackets after the message. Save the picture to a file and use Import instead.

"No colour to pick there: click on a picture"#

The eyedropper (E) reads a picture's own pixels, so a click on empty board has nothing to read. Press E again and click on a picture.

"Nothing rendered yet: render first (F12)"#

Add > Render Result needs a finished render. Press F12, wait for it to finish, then add it.

"Could not draw the viewport"#

Add > Viewport Snapshot could not draw the 3D View off screen. The reason follows in brackets. Try again with the viewport visible.

"Select an object first" and "Select an object with a material first"#

Show with needs a selected object. Picked Colour > To Material needs a selected object that has a material.

"No paint brush to give it to"#

Picked Colour > To Brush needs an active paint brush. Switch to Texture Paint or Grease Pencil drawing first.

"No colours to take: the picture is transparent"#

Make Palette reads a picture's visible colours, and this one has none.

"A video goes whole: its crop is only on the board"#

You sent a cropped video to the scene. The movie arrives uncropped; only the board shows the crop.

"Could not start the render: ..."#

Send to Pinvas could not start Blender's render. The text after the colon says why, often a movie output setting or a folder Blender cannot write to. Fix that setting in the Video Editor's scene, then click Send to Pinvas again. The scene's output settings are put back whatever happens.

"Could not write the board: ..."#

Export Board... could not save the .pinvas file. The reason follows the colon. Check that the folder exists and that you may write to it.

"Could not read the board: ..."#

Import Board... could not read the file. Check that it is a .pinvas file saved by Pinvas, and that it was not cut short when it was copied.

"Could not save the picture: ..."#

Export as PNG... could not write the picture. Check the folder and its permissions, then try the 1x size if 2x was chosen.

A picture shows as a red Missing box#

The picture is linked to a file that has moved or been deleted. Put the file back where it was, or import it again. To stop this happening, right-click and choose Pack Pictures into the .blend before moving or sending a file. See Boards and files.

Letters do things I did not expect#

Over the board, letters are shortcuts. S starts a scale and E starts the eyedropper. Press Esc to drop the action. To type text, open a note first; see Notes, frames and drawing.

The board says it is in another view#

A board lives in a single view. Click Dock It Here in the view that says so to bring it over.

A picture dropped on the viewport made an image empty#

Dropped anywhere except on the board, Blender does what it always does. Drop on the board and choose Add to Pinvas Board.

Questions before buying#

Which Blender versions work?#

Pinvas needs Blender 5.0.0 or newer.

Does Undock work on every system?#

On Windows, Undock opens a window of its own. On other systems the board floats over the viewport instead.

Do videos play sound?#

No.

Where are my pictures stored?#

In the .blend if they are packed or pasted, and on disk if they are linked. See Boards and files.

Still stuck?#

See Support for what to send.
